Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
