The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Poor Reception

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a clearer vision.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

A Pattern of Strategic Hires

The news echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock development group.

Below is the full content from the president's memo:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the necessity for a clearer identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to mind and reimagined the title with a renewed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our players.

The belief in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the incredible development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to welcome the new hire as the latest Studio Head of the team. After a period of talks, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

His management and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having dedicated the recent years developing and managing some of the most popular titles in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting him soon. We are all excited to keep witnessing the development of the game in the months to come.

David

Experience of the New Head

The appointee presently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary explains. "Take on the competition with new abilities, challenges, and obstacles that shift every match. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Or go big, gamble everything, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."

Project Ethos lacks an official debut schedule or platforms, but players can expect more updates as development progresses.
